Where Are The STATESMEN
We have plenty of Politicians, but where are the Statesmen ?
My father keeps reminding me of a quote :
"..Remember..The first duty of a politician is to get re-elected!"
Today unfortunately this is so true!
In bygone days, a large number of politicians worked "at the coalface" before entering politics. Many genuinely served their electorate, regardsless of their political pursuasion. We appear to have the opposite situation today where many come from staff of current or former politicians, or staff of unions.
Many politicians used to listen to their constituents. Today we are fed party spin and told what to do. Our elected officials, in theory, are supposed to do our bidding, not vice versa.
Years ago South Australia had a Premier, Tom Playford. Although a Liberal politician, many claim thathat he was the best "Labour Politician" SA ever had.I believe he was a true statesman with the best interest of South Australians at heart. His legacy still benefits South Australians today. His foresight and determination saw General Motors Holden and ETSA established for example.
Unfortunately I am not cognisant of a current politician at any level I would deem a Statesman.
