Who Is Jack
Jack was born Malcolm Lloyd Davey at Port Pirie, South Australia, in 1949.
In 1959 when he was in grade 5 at Solomontown Primary School, a then famous Radio Personality, Jack Davey, died. The kids at school decided to call him 'Jack'. The rest was history. For the rest of his time in Port Pirie and at University he was 'Jack'. A lot of people actually thought his name was 'John' and the nickname often had to be explained.
Jack was educated at Solomontown Infant/Primary School, Port Pirie High School (where his father, Ken Davey, was a respected teacher) then South Australian Institute of Technology (now Uni SA).
Jack's relatives had 'mixed farms' at Telowie (near Port Pirie). He had the privelege of seeing Draught Horses still being used by his Great Uncle, and the adaption of technology such as Electricity, Reticulated Water, Milking Machines etc. After completion of Matriculation exams (now yr 12), and before commencing a full time career, Jack helped family with spray painting implements and driving trucks to WA. Jack still has family with rural properties, and spent has much time at Oulnina Park Station lending an extra hand with mustering and yard-work, mainly at lamb marking and shearing time.
As a break from office based work (and for the experience), in the early 70's, Jack also worked as a labourer on concrete pumps and as a barman. He was not just 'a shiny pants'.
Jack missed out on National Service, but in a sense of duty joined the Army Reserve after returning from London. He deliberately rejected becoming a Commissioned Officer (he wanted different experience to his day job). A nine year career, ending as a Training Sergeant.
Jack embarked on his professional path as and Accounting Cadet in the Cost Office at the BHAS Smelter in Port Pirie. He studied half-time(mainly at night) for his Batchelor of Arts Degree in Accounting. Jack was priveleged to be part of a program that included a year of Computer Studies (still being utilised) and a post-graduate AASA (Senior).
Jack left Port Pirie to continue studies in Adelaide and worked with accounting firms, Wilson Bishop Bowes and Craig (now PKF), and Peat Marwick Mitchell and Co (now KPMG). Jack gained valuable experience working out of London for Peat's. Shortly after returning to Adelaide, Jack became the Internal Auditor for Myer SA Stores. Subsequent moves saw him working as Group Accountant and Financial Controller for several Australian and overseas firms. He particularly enjoyed his sojourns to Hong Kong to review and install systems. Best place in the world to eat! Jack also knows what it is like to be on the receiving end of takeovers, and the difficulty of getting work as an employee after you are no longer 'a young buck'.
In addition to his Accounting roles, as employee and at times as a consultant, Jack designed and installed Management Systems. Jack also wrote software in cases where none was commercially available. He still writes specialist software.
Jack has always enjoyed fishing, shooting and motorbike riding. There is a special affinity to Fisherman Bay where the family has always had shacks (earlist photo 1926). He is the custodian of the latest shack (built 1952). Music has always featured big time in his family. Jack played in Brass Bands, including BHAS Excelsior Brass at Port Pirie, City Of Enfield, Crystal Palace in the UK, and is a Life Member of K&N Brass.
